Last week, the editorial board of Gravity.es has decided to interview Manuel Franco, one of the outstanding members of Gravity´s teamwork, to give our readers a better image of what we have been doing on the last year, what we have achieved so far, and the new challenges that lie ahead of us.
E.L.: I understand that you have one year working with Gravity. So far, what can you say about your experience working here?
M.F.: Yes, I have one year working in Gravity, and the truth is that the teammates are lovely. I am very pleased about working there. The technological challenges that arise from working with digital transformation in Cepsa are quite fascinating. After being more than ten years working in the sector of computing technology, finally, I have found a place where I feel really good.
E.L.: What is your area of technical expertise and what functions do you perform within Gravity?
M.F.: Currently, I work as a full-stack developer for Gravity. As the projects normally have a brief time of duration and require not too much staff, there is a need for developers capable of addressing all the tasks related to front and back end, as well as to have a vertical knowledge of the application that is being developed.
In what regards to my technical education, I have completed a module in programming, as well as a college degree. Then, I have seen myself in the need of becoming a self-thaught person and learning that way, in order to be able to address the last developments in the field of software and technology in general, for the tools that I used to work with during the time I was still a college student are now completely obsolete, and many of the most important software tools used today did not exist by the time when I finished studying.
E.L.: In which projects have you worked for Gravity? Can you speak a little bit about them?
M.F.: In Gravity, I have worked in the projects Informe SP, Simulation Tool, CPA and Price.
Informe SP is a tool developed with the aim of generating weekly reports for the top executives of Cepsa. In the past, that process was carried out manually using tools like Word, and now we have developed a tool that allows us to edit in real-time. Simulation tool is a credit simulator that uses machine learning and big data technologies to analyze the risk when it comes to potential clients.
Price is a tool that calculates gasoline prices, also based on big data, and finally, CPA is a tool that automatizes invoice reconciliation, developed for Cepsa. Before we had this software, all the administrative processes were carried out manually, and now we have achieved to carry out around 80% of the process automatically.

E.L: What projects have been the most interesting for you, and why?
M.F.: There is a project that has always called my attention, and that is the RTP project, that consists in receiving in real-time the metrics of several refineries, using machine learning and big data as in the other projects that I have already mentioned, with the purpose of making the best decisions to increase profitability. To me, it seemed quite fascinating, for it is an application that must work in real-time, and works with refineries’ metrics.
E.L: I know that the working environment within Gravity is very nice and friendly. What is your impression while you have been working in Gravity? What is the thing that you enjoy the most when it comes to working in Gravity?
M.F.: As I said before, I have had a great experience working at Gravity. In the first place, I did not expect to found such a delightful place to work.
What I like the most about Gravity is both freedom and responsibility. There is a good confidence relation between Gravity’s work team, which means that the company gives me a maximum time to complete and deliver my work, that it is afterward agreed with the client because the company knows that I will deliver the work on time. That allows me to have more freedom and tranquility within the frame of working online, organizing my free days and so on, for I know that I will not be criticized, neither pressed constantly by the company to know if I am working or not. On the contrary, there exists confidence when it comes to work deadlines.
E.L: Regarding the technical aspect, what do you consider are the most important features of Gravity? What is its main value as a technological company? Can you tell us more about the most important projects that are now being developed?
M.F.: The great value of Gravity is that we are all serious and professional people. We are not a meat business that sells programmers by weight; we sell people with great technical knowledge. From my point of view that is the great technical value of Gravity, not selling programmers by weight, but offering quality programmers that have a huge experience in the development of cloud technologies in Amazon, a firm that currently is becoming the leading paradigm in what regards to technological development.
Also, as I told you before, the RTO project consists in establishing communication in real-time with refineries’ metrics and setting its parameterization using machine learning and big data, that is why I consider it one of the most notorious projects.
E.L.: Finally, how do you see the future perspectives for the software industry in the next months and years? What do you think about the current digital transformation process that is taking place?
How do you see Gravity concerning the challenging process of digital transformation?
M.F.: The perspectives for the software industry are very promising. Some people say that is a bubble, due to the particularly high wages and the lacking workforce, but actually, the reason is that in order to be able to work as a developer, and moreover as a senior developer, it is necessary to be professional and experienced, capable of learning, evolving and recycling, so this is a profession that you need to love.
Many people are capable of getting a minimal level, going to a boot camp or doing a module, and then finding a job of 8 hours 5, of 8 daily hours in a little office, without fighting for improving or taking any risks. On the other hand, those people that look for something more, that have a more competitive spirit, that like to move forward, well, those people are a minority within the industry, and actually, companies look for that kind of people. Therefore, it is not the case that there is a bubble in the industry, but that there are not enough developers, and the ones that exist are already working for certain companies, and once you are working for a company, you will not move from there to look for a new job just like that.
So, the perspectives are in fact promising, because even though many jobs are being destroyed, as it is occurring now with virtual supermarkets like Amazon, or with robots used by Wal-Mart to restocking shelves, there are going to be new jobs created, because those robots need maintenance, that artificial intelligence must be trained, and so on.
In that same vein, I am sure that the job that my son will do when he has grown up has not yet been discovered.
The digital transformation is a necessary step within companies. The companies that don’t carry out that process, that don’t adapt to the tool that we have today are going to stay obsoletes, and will not be able to compete in the same conditions with other companies in the market that already have carried out digital transformation processes.
To this respect, Gravity has a lot to contribute, because it has achieved to gather an excellent team, with a great experience in multiple sectors and in the handling of different tools, therefore, in my opinion, it is a company capable of solving almost every problem that could arise when it comes to digital transformation.
